Middle school students were among the very first to attend World Expo 2017 in Astana, the bright new shining capital city of Kazakhstan.

In spite of being the world’s ninth biggest country and in spite of the fact that is one of China’s biggest trading partners, not so many people  know all that much about Kazakhstan… except in BIBA.

A group of thirty students made the journey on an academic and cultural exchange with students from Kazakhstan’s leading school, Haileybury Astana.  The trip formed another part of the Service Learning programme and the theme of Expo 2017 is Future Energy.

Our group has been studying sustainable energy.  We realised early on that a major cause of our pollution problems in Beijing is the burning of fossil fuels to produce electricity for the city.  We know that there are related health issues and we wanted to find out more about future alternatives.  Expo gave us the chance to look into the future.  Trips such as this add a very valuable dimension to education at BIBA.

And there was a cultural dimension to the educational visit.  Our students prepared specially-arranged music which combined a well-known Chinese melody with an accompaniment of Kazakh traditional instruments.  We dressed in Han Dynasty costumes and performed with the international community choir and students from Haileybury in Expo, at the Chinese Pavilion, and then again back in school.

Thomas from Grade 6 enjoyed the experience: “Astana is an amazing city.  Some of the buildings are unbelievable.  Expo was fantastic.  I liked the BMW electric formula E racing car in the Germany Pavilion.”

“Because we were there on the opening day of Expo,” explained Dennis, “there were lots of important people.  I met the Dutch Ambassador, and we appeared on CCTV.”

Niuniu from Grade 8 was excited by what she found in one part of the Kazakhstan Pavilion, the vast spherical structure at the centre of the exhibition site:  “I hadn’t realised how close we are to overcoming the engineering problems of tokamak fusion reactors and stellarators.  Using toroidal and poloidal magnetic fields we can confine the deuterium-tritium plasma.”

Expo 2017 runs until 10th September.  In 2019, World Expo will come to Beijing, and the theme is Live greener, Live better during which we will welcome students from Haileybury Astana in the return leg of the academic and cultural exchange.
